As the van soars across I-40, it’s hard to recall what all has happened over the last few weeks. From the Mississippi gulf coast to the mountains of North Carolina, the mayhem has been on a beer-drenched tear through the Southeast gathering up new fans along the way.
The May tour started in the big easy early this month. Accompanied by ragtime roadster Mr. Pokey LaFarge as support, the south Louisiana shows were full of swinging cowboy boots, smiling faces, reckless abandon, and first-time bliss. We quickly headed back to Mississippi for a few private shows before heading out on a 3 week run across the Southeast.
The boys were all smiles as they zoomed across Alabama to the first show in
Auburn when tragedy struck. The van died. After several professional and unprofessional predictions, the mayhem string van was diagnosed with a blown transmission. Luckily, we were able to catch a limo to our afternoon gig at Hardee’s to unveil the new prime rib thickburger! Two days and 4 grand later, we had the van back on the road headed towards east Tennessee for several shows in the heartland of country music.
Midway through the tour we had one thing on our minds: rest. So, we loaded up the van with supplies and set up camp along the French broad river for 2 days of picking, singing, eating, drinking, and sleeping. We even managed to wrangle up some new fans down by the river.
Heading east out of the mountains we made a stop in Raleigh where we had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Lucky (Katharine Whalen and Will Dawson of The Squirrel Nut Zippers) on Mug Night at the Pour-House. The only downside to the show happened when the Captain JT Lack attempted a double-axle off of the speakers while playing the triangle during the Cajun section of the show. While the move was executed with perfection, he hobbled off with a high-ankle sprain and is now walking around with an alligator head cane. We are looking forward to another show with Lucky tonight at the Cave in Chapel Hill, then tomorrow it’s off to the beach for Memorial Day weekend… Your next Wilmington!

We took a few weeks off in January to regroup from the Colorado run but are back in full swing and ready for the spring. Just saw some crawfish being cooked the other day and I forgot all about the fact that there is no heat in the house. But it will all be good soon; during the few months of perfect weather they call Springtime in Dixie. That said, this winter was nothing short of freezing during our excursion out to the snow-covered peaks of Colorado. At a memorable show in Leadville (Captain's 30th b-day party), the temperature reached -30°F, I guess global warming doesn't apply to the highest city in the USA. We also did a breast cancer benefit show at the Lazy Dog in Boulder, where the bar and the band donated profit for the cause. After seven shows in a row in Colorado we ended up on good ole' Colfax Avenue at Sancho's Broken Arrow. Saw lots of old friends, met some new ones and after the show we high-tailed it straight through the cold Kansas night and made it back to Oxford in time for Parrish's x-mas party. When the festivities ended we slept a few hours and headed straight down to New Orleans where it was a breezy 50°. All in all it was a good end to '07, even got to take a tour of the Coors brewery (Red's 5th tour).
After a few weeks spent with family and friends, we played the Aflack "kick-off" party in Knoxville where the company was given a healthy dose of Mayhem to start the year off right.

Well, well, well...
Much has passed since we last spoke but fear not... we are still alive and well well well. Fall in Mississippi was filled with blooming cotton, smoking ribs, cold beer, pretty women, lots of pickin’ and another losing football season for Ole Miss. Ahhh well, at least the mosquitos weren’t too bad this year... And the show in Oxford after the LSU game was probably the craziest one in the books. Our good friend Pokey LaFarge came down from Louisville to open up along with Ferd from the Hackensaw Boys, who played the whole second half of the show on the fiddle. In November we shot down 55 to the Black Pot Festival in Lafayette, Louisiana - incredible cajun food, music, dancing, waking up on the ground tangled up in someone else’s tent you thought was yours. Go next year, or you’ll never know what a party is meant to be:
Tomorrow we are packing up the van and B-lining it straight to Boulder, Colorado for another dance with the mountains, come on!

Back Home
Well folks, the mayhem string van has landed safely back in the soft cotton of the Mississippi hills. After bathing in the rivers of Austin, the ship was steered across the bayous of South Texas and Louisiana where we stopped for the last 2 shows in the great city of New Orleans. The shows at the Maple Leaf were a blast, cumulating with the PA exploding and the band jumping down into the crowd and finishing the tour off the way bluegrass began... acoustic hootin’ and hollerin’!
After a huge feast with friends and family in Leland, everyone got about a week of rest before the van geared up to Nashville and we went airborne back to Colorado for a show and wedding in Boulder town. The 72 hours of madness that ensued will not be forgotten soon, arriving at the Nashville airport at 4am without a wink of sleep and having to convince the airport security to let us board the plane. In a matter of hours we were transported to the mountains and had a great crowd at the Lazy Dog that night. The Weinberg wedding on Sunday met all the hype that surrounded the event, with banisters crashing onto the dance floor and new moves being invented on the spot, MC Palmerica guided the whole reception with humor and grace...
Back in Dixie now we start a string of fall shows Thursday night in Starkville, see ya there!

Colorado/Texas
After a fortnight of chaos in the front range of colorado, we've managed to steer the mayhem string van into the ranch country of texas. However, the great times in colorado are still fresh on our minds. We would especially like to thank Mr. Palmer for his spiritual guidance, parachute hammock, and floor space. Everywhere from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs we were met with great hospitality and great crowds: The Bodine Family reunion in Lyons, the madness at the Lazy Dog and Mountain Sun in Boulder, strange adventures on Capitol Hill, delicious BBQ in Colorado Springs and all the great musicians we met and got to play with....
We went to town in Dallas and Fort Worth the past two nights, giving them a double-dose of mississippi mayhem and leaving them with a triple-texas hangover. The fine folks at Fred's Texas Cafe are a group of characters that we won't soon forget. Steve, Jimbo, Terry, Larry, and Bulldog reminded us to keep on living the dream. We made the mistake of stopping for lunch at a texas interstate cafe where the waitress informed us she had been up for 110 hours straight. Unfortunately, the food had been under an infrared light for an equal amount of time. So, with disgruntled guts we're barreling south down interstate 35 south towards Houston, then to Austin. Look out Louisiana, you're next!!!!

Colorful Colorado
Hello there friends.....Greetings from the sunshine state. We've been spreading mayhem cheer throughout southwest colorado for the past two weeks. There have been some wild adventures and interesting characters upon which we've stumbled over recently. The small mountain mining town of Silverton, CO lived up to its reputation as a place to drink beer, runover deer, and rope steer. We enjoyed an insane evening at the Pride of the West saloon where half the town showed up to watch the mayhem guzzle guinness, pick tunes, and stomp holes in the stage. The fourth set went down in mayhem history as the only ever fourth set and our drunkest public performance............EVER!!!!!! However, I'm pretty sure we pulled it off with savvy, poise, and elegance.
We eventually steered the mayhem string van into the mysterious territory of Telluride, CO where we were kindly and not so kindly asked to be quiet for five days straight. Despite our public approval rating of 12%, we treaded on.
We now find ourselves wrapping up the mountain dates this weekend before we pillage our way to the front range for two weeks of public and private onslaught. Happy 4th of July and see ya'll in Boulder!!!!

Got some photos up from the May tour. There is some camping, some pickin’, and some duck/sausage gumbo cookin’... mmmm. The east coast treated us mighty fine by letting us swim in its ocean, drink from its mason jars, and play for its people. We are back home for a few days recovering and then moving completely into the van for the next 8 weeks.

Why hello there friends and neighbors! It has been a month since the last update, but we are now officially on the road! It is Day 5 of the summer tour and we’re sitting in an Asheville coffee shop with shaky hands. We have had a good string of shows in East Tennessee and a pleasant visit to the Town Pump in Black Mountain, NC. Along the way we met a 4 time national Bull Riding Champion, gave an Australian his very first shot of Jagermeister, got lost at 4 in the morning in Cleveland, TN but found a great burger joint called “McDonalds”, and helped send a dear new friend off to the pen in style.
Camping in the mountains outside of Asheville for the past two nights has given the band a much needed rest with ample time to bath in the French Broad River. Late night picking and drinking have given light to some new tunes. And always remember.....when attacked with a rock, DUCK!!!!!

- The debut album “Rapscallions and Ne’erdowells” is now available on CD Baby and can also be downloaded as .mp3s, check the “tunes” page. We had some wild crowds for the CD release shows in Oxford, Jackson, and Ocean Springs and we’re looking forward to the Starkville CD release this Saturday! Come on down!
February 26, 2007
- “Rapscallions and Ne’erdowells” has been mixed, mastered and will be in your stereos in a few short weeks! We got some of the new songs up on the Tunes page and I’ve been trying to get some studio pictures up as well, but just remembered that I know nothin’ about this World Wide Web. We’re pretty excited about it though, especially the incredible artwork done by our good friend David Nichols. All I can reveal at this point is that it involves a possessed raccoon, fire and brimstone... based on true events. Peace...
-Kevin
(check out last months Spin magazine, we got a write-up as “The Best Time You’ll Have This Month” for the show at Two Stick in Oxford! And boy was it a time, John Sinclair read poetry, Lynn Drury opened up, and the folks were gettin down!)
January 22, 2007
- The new webpage is here! Hope ya’ll enjoy it, there are still a few kinks to be worked out.
- January has quite possibly been the busiest month in Mayhem history, and it ain’t even over yet. Chris was handed a scalding hot plate from an intoxicated relative on Christmas and the burn wounds on his finger have finally healed, so let the good times roll! Recording for the new album started last week over at Tweed Studios in Oxford, we’ll be in and out for the next few weeks recording 11 songs for the aptly titled “Rapscallions and Ne’erdowells.” We have also been named one of the 12 bands to participate in this years Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition in June. A Colorado tour is being planned for the summer so check back for the dates. There have also been a lot of crazy stories this January: witnessing a semi-truck crash into a bridge, getting harassed by deranged undercover cops, many good shows, and so much more.
That’s all for now.... stay tuned.
